About Quan Ba Heaven Gate
Quan Ba Heaven Gate – The Gateway to the Dong Van Karst Plateau
At an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level, Quan Ba Heaven Gate is one of the most iconic and breathtaking viewpoints in Ha Giang Province. Located about 46 kilometers north of Ha Giang City, this site marks the official entrance to the Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark—a UNESCO-recognized natural wonder.
Why is Quan Ba Heaven Gate special?
Quan Ba Heaven Gate lies atop the winding Bac Sum Pass, right where the steep climb gives way to the highlands of the Dong Van plateau. Historically, the French built a giant wooden gate here in 1939, symbolizing the division between the lowlands and the mountainous region. Although the original wooden gate is no longer standing, a sign now marks this historic and symbolic location—“Cổng Trời Quản Bạ”.
The pass between the two mountain peaks forms a narrow "gate" to the skies, where visitors can feel like they're walking among the clouds. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the picturesque Tam Son town, nestled in a lush valley surrounded by rugged limestone karsts.
What can you see and do?
Soak in panoramic views of the Tam Son valley and surrounding mountains.
Visit the famous Fairy Bosom Hills (Núi Đôi Cô Tiên) – twin rounded hills said to resemble a woman’s breasts, a natural wonder steeped in local legend.
Photograph the sunrise or watch the mist roll across the mountains for a truly magical experience.
Breathe in the fresh mountain air and experience the shift in climate and landscape that marks the entrance to Ha Giang’s legendary rocky plateau.
Learn about the geological diversity and cultural richness of the area, which is home to many ethnic minority communities.
Tip: If you're starting the Ha Giang Loop, Quan Ba Heaven Gate is your first major stop. It sets the tone for the wild beauty and raw landscapes ahead.
